Break in procedure for Nitro Engine

Heat Cycling

A good break in procedure is always valuable for someone taking care of a nitro remote control car engine. One method is called “heat cycling”.

To follow this method:

1. Start the engine and let it idle, then after one or two minutes feel the cylinder head. It should be hot enough that you are not able to hold it for more than 10 seconds.

2. Stop the engine and make sure that piston is at the bottom of the stroke. Allow it to cool down completely, until it is stone cold. Repeat the procedure several times, may be 10-12 times. It may seem like a tiresome procedure, but one needs to have patience. This procedure is usually dedicated to the first tank of fuel.

3. Take it out and run it. Open the main needle one full turn. For te next four tanks, you should not run more than half throttle, and the speed should be varied. Let the engine cool down completely, but each time ensure that the piston is at the bottom of the stroke at the time of cooling. It would be a good idea if the engine runs at 200 degree range during this period.

4. Next would be four more tanks, this time running up to 3 quarters throttle, but the manner should be same as before.

5. After this you one can go full throttle for another six tanks. These engines run best at 220 to 240 degrees, plus you should see a visible line of smoke should always be coming from the exhaust stinger.

There is one thing you should always bear in mind while doing the break-in of your nitro remote control car engine, especially with the heat method mentioned above. It is not advisable to start the engine with the electric starter. Before starting up the engine, it is a good idea to cover up the cooling head, so the engine heats up properly. This is because without the cover the engine may remain cold. Then start the engine and let it run rich at full throttle for 2-tanks at a temperature of 80 degrees Centigrade. Then two more runs at 90 and 100 degrees.

After this the engine is almost run-in, but you shall need to finish the run-in with two more tanks. After such a patient procedure the car would be ready to run as normal. The break in of the nitro engine is complete.

A Few More Tips For Nitro Remote Control Engine Break-In

1. To begin with, read all the information available. Information can never harm; on the contrary it might help you with your remote control car nitro engine.

2. Be very patient with the whole procedure of how to break-in your nitro engine. If you have patience, and take time with your break in procedure, then you will be rewarded with an engine that is stronger, and runs longer than others put together.

3. Many people recommend using 10-20% nitro for breaking it in, then then they stick with the same fuel for the life of the engine. Therefore, special break-in fuel might not be really necessary for your nitro engine.
