Childish Baby Clothing

What is it most new parents think of when you say childish baby clothing? It could be interpreted in quite opposite ways, depending on the attitude of the baby's parents and the "norm" in their family and circle of friends.

One set of parents may see childish baby clothing as clothing which will move the baby, at least in appearance and fashion, too quickly from the baby stage to the young child who goes to playschool, and runs around the park playing ball, always wearing clothes that are similar in style to a child several years older.

Another set of parents may use the expression childish baby clothing in quite the opposite way. They see babies in clothes which,  in style, were really meant for an older child, teenager, or adult. To them, they may be seeking more childish baby clothing, which makes the baby appear more like a......baby.

Whichever school of thought you may be in, it is worth remembering that your baby will grow soon enough without you forcing the issue with more mature styles of clothing. Time will fly, and that baby will soon be a teenager, so it is best to enjoy each phase to the full and let it take it's natural course. Baby clothing, childish baby clothing and all the other phases of clothing all have their right place in the development and growth of your baby, so there really is no need to push things too hard. Why make her years appear to pass quicker than they actually will?

Having said that, you will soon see if your "baby" is ready to move on from tiny tot baby clothing to childish baby clothing, as at some stage they will show an interest. Baby fashions are usually an indulgence of adults rather than babies, so forcing impractical and uncomfortable clothes on the baby at a very young age will not help them. However, once they are more interested in what they wear, and more demonstrative about it too, then baby clothing can become more of a partnership.

My 18 month old daughter, Saffron, took an interest in what she wore at a very young age, and has been quite the little fashion model for a year now. But she is also a strong, demonstrative character, and if something is uncomfortable, she has long since known how to tell us. She was trying to rip off uncomfortable tops many months ago. If she did not like childish baby clothing, then there is no way we could have avoided knowing once she had reached 6 months or so; maybe even sooner.

Surprisingly, even though we are in a tropical climate, she loves wearing jeans and her very stylish boots. Given that she seems to share my English thermostat, and definitely my white skin and sweat glands, those are the last things I would have expected her to enjoy wearing. But, enjoy she does, and is often reluctant to put on more practical open sandals or slippers.

As with buying clothing for a new born, as a baby gets older, comfort is important; however, you will soon have their own input to help guide you. If childish baby clothing is not for them, there's a good chance they will let you know.
